Across cultures and throughout history, initiation has served a single purpose: to move a boy into manhood by compelling him to cross three fundamental thresholds. Modern culture has largely abandoned this process — which is why so many men remain psychologically stuck in boyhood, regardless of their age or achievements.
The Three Thresholds are:
Threshold 1 — Separation from boyhood and the comforts of the mother’s world. This isn’t about rejecting the feminine or your actual mother. It’s about leaving behind the psychological need for unconditional comfort, approval, and nurturing. The boy seeks comfort. The man learns to tolerate hardship without collapsing.
Threshold 2 — Finding inner courage and resolve. Not the performance of bravery. It’s about finding and connecting with the capacity to face what frightens you — your own shadow, your failures, your mortality — and choose to act anyway. This is where self-respect is forged.
Threshold 3 — Finding purpose: becoming a contributor. The mature man doesn’t live for himself alone. He asks: what am I here to give? Purpose isn’t a career goal. It’s the orientation of a life toward something larger than personal comfort or status.
Crossing these thresholds doesn’t happen automatically. It requires deliberate work — and often, the support of a guide who has crossed them himself.
