Animation is the state of active engagement — starting and sustaining effort even in the absence of felt desire to do so. It’s the phase between inertia and flow, and it’s where most performance is actually built. The key insight is that you don’t need to feel motivated to begin; you need to begin in order to feel motivated. Once you understand that animation can be activated by an internal decision rather than an external trigger, you have a tool that is independent of your mood, your circumstances, or whether the task feels exciting. That shift from reactive to internally-activated engagement is one of the most useful things a person can develop — and one of the most important things a leader can model.
