The Enneagram for Men | Ways to Work With Me

You’ve read the articles. You know your number — and you’ve started to see the shape of your own shadow. This is where you stop reading about it and start doing the work.

enneagram for men nine types

Somewhere between the mid-thirties and the mid-fifties, for most men, the strategy that got you this far quietly stops delivering. The thing you were always good at — being the strong one, the good one, the capable one, the easy-going one — starts producing results you didn’t order. The people around you keep handing you the same feedback. And underneath it all sits the part of yourself you’ve spent your whole life managing so that nobody would notice.

That’s not a breakdown. It’s the grey stage of maturity — the point where the shadow starts asking to come home. Most men either double down on the old strategy or bolt back to the motorcycle. A few turn around and do the work.

This page is for the ones who want to turn around.

Reading the map isn’t the same as walking the terrain

The articles and the reports give you the map: your type, the shape of your shadow, the four stages, and where the road goes. That’s real — and for some men, seeing it clearly is enough to set things moving. But insight and change aren’t the same thing. Knowing what you avoid doesn’t automatically hand you the ability to stop avoiding it. That part tends to happen faster, and stick better, with someone walking alongside you who can see the move you can’t. That’s what I do.

How I work

My Enneagram work with men runs on the line that your type points to your shadow, and your maturity depends on integrating it. We find your dominant type, name the one thing it’s had you avoiding, and locate you on the four stages of male maturity — the framework I adapted from the work of Carl Jung and Robert Bly. Then we do the actual work of bringing home what got shut out. It’s practical, direct, and built for men who’d rather be handed something to do than something to feel. If you want the thinking behind it first, start with the pillar guide, The Enneagram for Men.

Ways to work together

There are three ways in, depending on how far you want to go. Each one is a standalone package.

Enneagram Report & Debrief   ·   R1,650

You complete a proper Enneagram assessment, and then we sit down together and go through it — your dominant style, your area of avoidance, and the shape your shadow takes. You walk away knowing your number and, far more usefully, knowing the one thing your type has had you avoiding your whole life. It’s the foundation everything else is built on.

The Potentiate Package   ·   R4,150

The kick-in-the-pants package. Everything in the Report & Debrief, plus three follow-up coaching sessions where we take what the report surfaces and actually do something with it — the integration work, on your specific shadow, at your specific stage. This is the one for the man who doesn’t just want to understand the pattern but wants to break it. The report and debrief are folded in, so what you’re really adding is three sessions of genuine movement.

enneagram for men nine types

Why work with me

I’m Neil Bierbaum — an Enneagram practitioner and leadership coach with more than 20 years in practice and over 500 type debriefs behind me. I created the Four Stages of Male Maturity framework, adapted from the work of Carl Jung and Robert Bly, and I write The Enneagram for Men. I’ve spent those years watching where men get stuck — and, more to the point, what actually gets them moving again.

Questions men ask before starting

How is this different from regular Enneagram coaching?2026-08-22T12:28:13+00:00

Most Enneagram work stops at typing you — here’s your number, here are your traits. I use the type as a starting point, not a destination: we go from your type to the shadow it points to, and then do the actual work of integrating it as you move through the four stages of male maturity. The typing is the first ten minutes; the growth is everything after.

Do I need to know my type before we start?2026-08-22T12:28:26+00:00

No. You’ll complete a proper assessment that will give us accurate data on your dominant type, which we’ll confirm in your debrief. That’s why it’s the first rung: everything else builds on knowing your number and the shape of your shadow.

What if two types feel like me?2026-08-22T12:28:38+00:00

That’s common, and it’s fine. We all carry elements of all nine — the question is which one is your main thing. Sometimes two sit close and show up in different situations; if so, we work with both. The debrief is where we sort out which is primary and which is secondary, or which show up most in which contexts.

Is this coaching or therapy?2026-08-22T12:28:50+00:00

Coaching. It’s forward-looking and practical — about growing up and stepping into the next stage of maturity, not treating a clinical condition. If something comes up that’s better served by a therapist, I’ll say so; the two can work well side by side.

Not sure where to start?

Start with the report. It’s R1,650, it’s the first rung on the ladder, and everything else builds on what it shows you. Worst case, you walk away knowing your type and the exact shape of your shadow — which is more than most men ever get. Best case, it’s the thing that turns you around.
