The conscious leader chooses response over reaction.

He knows that, no matter how good the source, there are always two sides to a story and he listens to both before he decides how to respond. He is careful that he responds, and does not react.

To react means to make someone wrong, to defend one’s position or attack the other person’s position, or to cover up in an attempt to save face. Reactions are usually based on assumptions and are self-serving and ultimately destructive.

To respond means to act in alignment with a higher value. To decide something for the greater good of the whole. To make the right decision, even when it’s hard. To do something for the right reasons – even when it might not protect your domain or save your own skin.

The conscious leader knows that, even if he gets knocked back a few steps, he will win the long game when he responds consciously.
